What is a custom field?
A custom field is a new attribute you add to a product beyond the system's default information (name, price, stock, description). Fabric type and weight for a textile product, voltage and protection class for an electrical product, origin and storage conditions for a food product, a list of compatible models for a spare part — each of these is a custom field.
On many hosted platforms, products are squeezed into a few variant templates such as "color and size." Everything else gets written into the description text. That means customers can't filter by that information, and search engines can't read it properly either.
How do custom fields work in IMFLEXI?
- Unlimited fields: You can add as many custom fields to products as you like. There are different field types, such as text, number, selection list, yes/no and date.
- Grouping: Fields are organized into groups such as "Technical specifications," "Material and care" and "Certificates," and appear as a tidy table on the product page.
- By product type: Each product type is assigned only the relevant fields. A flow-rate field appears on a valve product but not on a thermostat.
- Multilingual: Field names and values are kept separately in each language; in multilingual stores, translation is managed from one place.
- As filters on the storefront: The fields you choose become filters on category pages. Customers can narrow down to "stainless steel only, 24 V, IP65."
Why does it matter?
Customers find the right product faster
Especially with technical products, customers search by attribute, not by product name. The right filter turns a visitor who would have left saying "I couldn't find what I was looking for" into a sale. The difference is clear with industrial products; we describe our approach on our manufacturing and industry page.
Search engines and AI understand your product
Structured attribute data helps search engines and AI-based search tools understand your product correctly. Tidy fields, rather than information buried in description text, make it into product schemas and comparison results more easily. We cover this topic more broadly in our SEO and GEO service.
Fit with marketplaces and your ERP
Marketplaces require specific attributes per category. Custom fields in IMFLEXI are mapped to the attributes the marketplace asks for, so products are sent complete to every channel. Details: marketplace integration.
Forms and other records
The custom field logic isn't limited to products. Quote, application and support forms can also be built without code, with whatever fields you need. For support requests, different field sets can be defined per department.
Frequently asked questions
Can we import our existing product attributes in bulk?
Yes. Attributes are imported in bulk from Excel or from data taken out of your current system. We handle this mapping during the migration.
Will the site slow down as the number of fields grows?
No. Filters and category lists are precomputed and cached; the number of fields does not affect the speed visitors experience.
Can we turn a field into a filter later?
Yes. Whether a custom field appears as a filter is switched on and off from the panel.
