SEO and GEO

Can nearby customers find you on the map?

When a customer types a near-me search or a service plus a district name into their phone, map results appear first. Showing up there depends less on a big budget and more on consistent, accurate information.

Local SEO is the work that makes a business visible to people searching in a particular city, district or neighborhood. For clinics, auto repair shops, stores, restaurants, hotels and any company serving a region, the most valuable part of the search results is the map and the three-business list below it. The main source for this area is Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).

In this post we explain how to build a solid profile, how to manage reviews and how your website contributes to local visibility.

How does Google rank local results?

Google openly lists three main factors for local ranking in its own help documentation:

  • Relevance: How well does your profile match what is being searched? Category, service list and description are decisive here.
  • Distance: How close is the searcher, or the location named in the search, to you?
  • Prominence: How well known is your business? Review count and rating, mentions in other sources online and the strength of your website all count.

You can't change distance. But relevance and prominence are entirely in your hands, and most businesses miss real opportunities in both.

The foundation: the right category and complete information

The single most effective setting in the profile is the primary category. Choosing just "Clinic" instead of "Dental clinic," or just "Service" instead of "Air conditioning repair service," pushes you away from the most searched terms. Pick the narrowest, most accurate primary category and limit additional categories to services you actually provide.

Then fill in every field in the profile: business hours (including public holidays), the list of services or products, service areas, description, website address and phone number. If you serve customers from an address where you don't receive visitors, you can hide the address and define a service area instead; this is the method that complies with Google's rules.

Photos matter more than people think. Exterior, entrance, team and real work photos build trust and make it easier for visitors to find you. Stock images don't do this job.

Keeping your name, address and phone the same everywhere

The term "NAP consistency" comes up often in local SEO: Name, Address, Phone. These three details should be exactly the same on your website, your Google profile, your social accounts and directory sites. Small differences like "Çankaya/Ankara" versus "Ankara Çankaya," or an old phone number, make it harder for Google to be sure these records belong to the same business.

On your website, give this information as plain text both on the contact page and in the footer, and mark it up with structured data as well. We explain how to add local business markup in our post on Schema.org structured data.

Reviews: the replies matter as much as the count

Reviews affect both rankings and the customer's decision. There are two rules here. First, buying reviews, asking for reviews in exchange for discounts, or selectively collecting reviews only from happy customers goes against Google's policies and can lead to restrictions on your profile. Second, simply asking the customer for a review each time you finish a job is completely legitimate and the most effective method.

Write a calm, specific reply to every review, especially the negative ones. A good reply to a negative review is often as convincing to the next customer as a five-star review.

How does your website support local visibility?

The profile alone is not enough. If you have multiple branches, create a separate page for each one with genuinely different content: address, directions, that branch's team and services. If you work from a single address and serve other cities remotely, describe honestly on your service pages which regions you serve and how, rather than producing copy-paste pages for each city. Identical texts with only the city name swapped may work in the short term, but they risk being treated as low-quality content.

Healthcare needs extra care: when replying to patient reviews, no personal health information should be shared. We describe our approach to this on our healthcare and clinics page.

How we do it at Globya

We treat local visibility as a trio of profile, website and structured data. In our SEO and GEO service, setting up the profile, planning branch pages and checking address consistency are done together. For appointment-based businesses such as auto repair shops and clinics, we also look at how calls coming from the profile are handled; for examples, see our automotive and service page.

Is Google Business Profile paid?

No, creating and managing a profile is free. Ads on the map are a separate paid service and do not directly affect the profile's organic visibility.

I don't have an office and work from home. Can I open a profile?

If you serve customers face to face, yes. Just hide your address and define the areas you serve. Businesses that work only remotely may not be eligible for a profile under Google's rules.

Can I delete a negative review?

You can't delete a review yourself. If it violates Google's policies (insults, fake accounts, off-topic content and the like), you can report it. In other cases, the right approach is to write a professional reply.
