Custom orders with a product configurator

Not every product sits on the shelf in one standard form. The way to sell products that are cut to size, assembled piece by piece or colored to the customer's choice online is to let customers build the product themselves.

What is a product configurator?

A product configurator is an ordering tool where customers build a product by making choices step by step and see the up-to-date price with every choice. What sets it apart from the "choose size and color" boxes of standard e-commerce is that choices can affect each other, can be tied to rules, and the price is calculated based on those choices.

In IMFLEXI, this is handled by a configurator called KitBuilder. The product manager defines the steps, options, rules and price effects in the admin panel, and the customer follows those steps on the website to build the product.

Which products is it right for?

IndustryExampleConfiguration steps
Furniture and home decorModular sofaNumber of modules, fabric, color, leg type
Building materialsMade-to-measure panel or profileWidth, length, thickness, surface
Mechanical and HVACPre-assembled installation kitCapacity, connection type, accessories
Cosmetics and personal careGift setBox, products, card message

What these products have in common is that they are usually sold through long quote exchanges over the phone or email. The configurator hands most of that back-and-forth over to the customer's own choices. For related industry needs, see our furniture and home decor page.

Rules and price calculation

A configurator's value comes from setting up the rules correctly. Some examples:

  • A certain fabric is offered only in certain colors; the other colors become unavailable.
  • As dimensions grow, the price is calculated per square meter or per meter.
  • An accessory is shown only above a certain capacity.
  • Tiered discounts apply as the number of products in a set increases.

Thanks to these rules, customers can't order a combination that can't be produced, and your team doesn't have to spend time fixing wrong orders. When the product image also changes with each choice, customers see what they're buying before they decide, which lowers the chance of returns.

From order to production

A configured order arrives in the panel, and in the ERP if you want, with all of its choices. Your production or warehouse team reads what to prepare from structured lines, not from free-text notes. This noticeably reduces errors, especially for companies that make products to order.

Setup checklist

  • Have all product options and mutually exclusive combinations been listed?
  • Is the price effect of each choice clear — fixed or percentage-based?
  • Will the image change based on the choices?
  • In what format should the order details sent to production be?

Frequently asked questions

Can I update the configurator myself?

Yes. Options, rules and price effects are edited in the admin panel without writing any code.

Can dealers use the configurator too?

Yes. Dealers can be shown prices calculated from their own price lists. For details, see our B2B dealer portal page.

Does it work for very complex products?

The more steps there are, the more the design matters. For complex products, we group the choices and build a flow that doesn't overwhelm the customer.
