The basic difference between a package and custom software
An off-the-shelf package is designed for the shared needs of thousands of companies. It is quick to set up, has been proven by other companies, and the vendor handles maintenance. In return, you adapt your business to the way the package assumes you work.
Custom software starts from your process. Screens, fields, approval steps and reports are built around the way you work. In return, it takes longer to prepare, needs a more careful analysis and calls for an ongoing maintenance relationship.

When an off-the-shelf package is right
The rules for accounting, payroll, e-invoicing, business email and general file sharing are set by law or by widely accepted practice. Being different here gains you nothing. In these areas, using an established product is almost always the better choice. For accounting, for example, rather than rewriting an ERP such as Netsis or Logo (the ERP systems widely used in Türkiye), it makes far more sense to add a small piece of software that reads data from it.
When custom software is right
Custom software makes sense for the processes that set you apart from competitors, or that no package fully covers. Concrete examples:
- At a mechanical installation firm, project tracking that runs from site survey to proposal, and from bill of materials to progress payments.
- At a wholesale company, dealer-specific price lists, quotas and promotion rules.
- In service, a fault report landing on the technician's phone and being closed in the field with photos and a signature.
- In production, real-time tracking of work orders as they move between stations.
The hybrid route — our most common recommendation
For most companies, the right answer combines the two: core transactions stay in the package, and a thin custom layer is added around it. This layer reads data from the package, makes the team's daily work easier and, where needed, writes the results back into the package. Is customizing a package cheaper than custom software?
For small changes, yes. But changes that go against the package's core logic have to be reworked with every version update; in the long run, a custom layer can cost less.
