Is it time to redesign your old website?

Not every old website needs a redesign; but if certain signs appear, the site has stopped helping and is quietly losing you customers.

The decision to redesign a website often starts with a feeling: "our site looks dated." That feeling may be right, but on its own it is not a sufficient reason. Appearance is one of the least important reasons for a redesign. The real question is whether the site is doing its job today. In this article we go through the concrete signs that it is time for a website redesign, how to check each one, and how to decide between redesigning and repairing.

Nine signs it is time for a redesign

Sign 1: It doesn't work properly on a phone

Open your site on your own phone and act like a customer: find a product, fill in the contact form, tap the phone number. Is the text tiny, are the buttons hard to hit with a finger, does the page scroll sideways? A large share of visitors arrive on a phone; a site that is hard to use on a phone loses most of them on the first screen.

Sign 2: You can't update the content

If you have to call someone to add a new product, change a price list or post an announcement, the site is no longer a living tool. Over time the content gets stale and the team becomes reluctant to show the site to anyone. You can find a comparison of what an admin panel should look like in our article on off-the-shelf CMS vs. a custom admin panel.

Sign 3: Security warnings and outdated software

A "not secure" warning in the browser, plugins that haven't been updated in years, an end-of-life PHP version or a past hacking incident are serious signs. Outdated software can put at risk not just your website but also your email and data on the same server.

Sign 4: There is a form, but no leads

If the site gets visits but no quote requests, the problem lies either in the form or in how persuasive the pages are. Sometimes the form has been sending email to an address nobody has read for years. Fill in the form yourself and check where the message lands.

Sign 5: Your company changed, your site didn't

New product groups, new markets, new services, closed branches, team members who have left. If the site still describes the company of five years ago, visitors can't get to know the company you are today. This sign is especially strong if you have started exporting and the site is only in Turkish.

Sign 6: It loads slowly

Measure it with free tools such as Google's PageSpeed Insights. Sometimes the cause of slowness is a single large image, sometimes the whole platform. To find out which, you need measurement first and diagnosis second.

Sign 7: It doesn't show up in search engines

If you don't rank near the top even when people search for your company name, or you don't appear at all for your most basic service keywords, the site's technical foundation or content structure has a problem. Your company never coming up in AI assistants' answers is a similar sign.

If there is no privacy notice under KVKK (Türkiye's Personal Data Protection Law), no cookie notice, and no explicit consent or acknowledgment checkbox on the forms, that is a gap both legally and in terms of trust. On its own this gap may not require a redesign, but if the old platform makes it hard to add these, the decision gets easier. We describe how we handle this on our approach to KVKK page.

Sign 9: Nobody owns it

If nobody knows who built the site, where it is hosted or who has the passwords, the site is unmanageable even if it technically works. That means when a problem comes up, fixing it takes days.

Redesign or repair?

Not every sign calls for a redesign. The table below can make the decision easier:

SituationRepair may be enoughRedesign makes sense
SlownessIf caused by images and pluginsIf caused by the platform
Mobile issuesMinor layout shifts on a few pagesIf the whole design was built for desktop
Hard to updateIf there is a panel but training is lackingIf there is no panel or it's unusable
SecurityIf a one-time update is enoughIf the software is no longer supported
ContentIf a few pages are outdatedIf the company's story has changed from the ground up

A rough rule of thumb: if three or more signs appear at the same time, piecemeal repairs usually end up costing more than a redesign.

Quick self-assessment list

  • Can you fill in the contact form on a phone in one minute?
  • Can you add a new product on your own?
  • Is there a security warning in the browser?
  • How many leads came through the form in the last three months, and where did they land?
  • Does the site accurately describe your current products and services?
  • Who holds the domain, hosting and admin panel passwords?

How we do it at Globya

First we map out the situation together. As part of our free preliminary analysis, we look at your site's speed, mobile experience, security and search visibility, and tell you plainly whether a repair or a redesign makes more sense. If the decision is to redesign, the new corporate website is ready within the first 10 days; your current site stays live in the meantime, and once the new one is ready, the switch happens in a single step. We describe the method we follow to avoid losing traffic during the move in our article on keeping your traffic during a site redesign.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a website be redesigned?

There is no fixed interval. If none of the signs above appear and the site is kept up to date with regular maintenance, it can serve you well for years. What decides it is not age but whether the site is doing its job.

Will our Google rankings drop during a redesign?

If old addresses are redirected correctly and important content is preserved, no lasting drop should be expected. Short-term fluctuations are normal.

Is it possible to redesign only the look?

It is, if the platform is solid and up to date. But if the platform is outdated, changing only the design does little more than hide the problems behind a new look.
